KENNETT — A section of downtown Kennett had to be evacuated after a tanker truck overturned, spilling chemicals onto the roadway.

The accident happened Monday in front of the Daily Dunklin Democrat newspaper office. An employee of the newspaper pulled the driver out of the truck. The driver was shaken up but said he was not injured.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Authorities roped off a large portion of the street and asked businesses in the area to temporarily close and evacuate, citing hazardous material concerns.

The chemical inside the truck was believed to be fertilizer used in farming. It had a strong odor.
