KENNETT — A spill in downtown Kennett turned out to be nonhazardous — just messy and smelly.

The spill happened Monday morning in the Missouri Bootheel town. Tim Moore of Pascola told authorities he felt the rear axle give out on his tanker truck and the next thing he knew it was on its side.

Authorities asked businesses in the area to temporarily close and evacuate after some of the 3,500 gallons of a liquid fertilizer in the tank spilled on the roadway.

By late-morning, authorities declared the spill nonhazardous. Still, the mix of ammonium nitrate and urea had a strong odor.

Authorities say the accident appeared to be the result of a vehicle malfunction, and no citation was issued.
