Spring storm hits Kansas, Missouri

GREENSBURG, Kan. — No damage has been reported after a tornado touched down in rural Kiowa County four miles northwest of Greensburg.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling says the twister spotted Tuesday night is not the first Kiowa County has seen since an EF-5 twister nearly leveled Greensburg in 2007.

The tornado was part of the severe weather that hit parts of southern Kansas and southwest Missouri on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Ritterling says a surge of dry air hit a frontal boundary, causing damaging winds, heavy rain and hail that reached the size of baseballs in some areas.

Numerous tornado watches and warnings were issued across parts of Kansas and Missouri. Ritterling says that besides the Kiowa County twister, there also have been preliminary reports of tornadoes in rural areas of southeast Kansas.
