COLUMBIA — Authorities are investigating a central Missouri house fire that killed one person and sent another person to the hospital with serious injuries.

Boone County sheriff's officials confirmed Wednesday that 72-year-old Joseph Hart died in the fire northeast of Columbia. His 48-year-old daughter, Gayla Hart, suffered burns.

Scott Olsen, interim fire chief for the Boone County Fire Protection District, said firefighters had tried to rescue the man from a back bedroom Tuesday but could not because of heavy smoke and fire.

Two other adults and a 4-year-old child escaped from the home.
