The Daniel Boone Regional Library finds a new image

COLUMBIA — As a part of Daniel Boone Regional Library's 50th anniversary, the library will for the first time have its own logo.

The logo, created by Woodruff Sweitzer advertising agency at a cost of $4,500, features an open book with various shapes and colors coming out of it.

Kris Farris, public relations coordinator for the library, said the shapes and colors exploding from the open book are meant to signify that everyone is welcome at the library.

"We need a logo to portray who we are," Farris said.

The Columbia Library Board felt the open book design was more of an active representation of the library, Farris said. The logo was created in order to invite people to the Daniel Boone Library system to let them know the library has more than just books to offer.

"This is not a boring library," Daniel Boone Regional Library Director Melissa Carr said. The library wants something a little fresher than our neighboring libraries, she said.

The other design up for consideration was books placed in a circle to represent community, however it was declined by the library board.

Two slogans were presented to the library board at its May 14 meeting. The board was unable to choose between "Inquire Within" and "Start Here," so they were given one month to decide.

During the Thursday night meeting, the board chose not to pass any of the three tag lines after a 6-6 vote. "Start Here", which was the favored tag line of the board, was discovered to be ABC's tag line by absent board member Tonya Hays-Martin in a memo to the group. Because of a possible copyright infringement the board decided to not go with it.

A new slogan, "Yours, Mine, Ours," was introduced but declined.

Both Carr and Farris hope that the logo will be ready by sometime in July, when the library celebrates its 50th anniversary.

This is an abomination. I lay the blame on the creative team at Woodruff-Sweitzer. The library board may not know any better, but anyone who holds a job with "designer" in the title and gets paid for it should be ashamed that they let this out the door.

I'm sorry to see that our library will be represented by something that a 12-year-old could create in MS Paint.

Our library is already decorated with towers of shredded yellow scrap metal. Why should their logo display any more taste or sophistication?

I don't have as much of a problem with the actual composition as some other people...but for $4500, couldn't they provide you with an image that doesn't have all those nasty jpg artifacts?

I've already picked out a few book titles that portray who you are.
Alice in Wonderland, Tripping on Acid and Picasso's Cubism meets Salvador Dali.
And I won't charge you a dime.
(I've been more impressed with finger painting done by Kindergartners compared to that demented clown face logo.)

Please tell me this graphic was designed by a committee. Otherwise, there can be no excuse for such a backhanded effort. Obviously no attempt has been made to represent our unique library, nor Columbia or even mid-Missouri.

What this 'logo' represents is a missed opportunity. Too bad.

For $4,500 the library could have bought more books! Every single time I went to that library they did not have the book I was looking for. And I'm talking books by C.S. Lewis and The Art of War. How great would the 50th anniversary of the library be if they were to open boxes upon boxes of new books.
