PrintCAMDENTON — Fire officials believe a lightning strike was to blame for a large fire that totaled a four-story condominium building on the Lake of the Ozarks.
Fire Chief John Suellentrop with the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District said firefighters were called to the condos at Summer Place on the Lake just before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
He said no one was in the eight condo units in Camdenton destroyed by the fire. He said they are largely used as vacation homes.
Eight fire departments responded to the fire, which Suellentrop said was under control by midmorning and extinguished around 3 p.m.
Suellentrop said no one was injured, though that section of condos is considered a total loss.

Did they all have sprinkler systems installed? If not they should have.
Why should they have? Perhaps they are old enough that sprinklers were not required by whatever building code may be present down there. But why should new construction be forced to have sprinkler systems? I should be free to have such a system installed or not installed as I see fit.
I wonder how many of the owners are sad, and how many are thankful? Also how many other condo owners at the lake are wishing they knew how to cause a lightning strike?
John Schultz the thing is down there at the lake anywhere you go near the water at all the roads are narrow and winding and you just do not get full size fire rigs there that quickly. Even with the tiny fire boat at the dam stationed there it takes time to get around,pump water etc.
That is one area that should require all new homes and new condo type units being built to install sprinkler systems.
Almost everyone lives some distance from the nearest fire station (I am probably a good six minute drive from mine, for instance). Doesn't that logic demand that everyone should have sprinklers in their house?
