Sen. Kurt Schaefer's name was previously misspelled in the headline of this story.

JEFFERSON CITY — A Columbia-area state senator is running robocalls urging his mid-Missouri constituents to lobby Gov. Jay Nixon in support of a university cancer hospital.

The automated phone calls from Republican Sen. Kurt Schaefer say he fears Nixon is close to vetoing funding for the new hospital at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Schaefer said in an interview Wednesday that his information comes from "several people in positions to know" whom he trusts. But he declined to identify his sources.

Nixon spokesman Scott Holste declined to say whether the Democratic governor is considering a veto.

A budget bill passed by the Legislature would fund the cancer hospital with $31 million in federal economic stimulus money.
