ST. LOUIS  — A monument honoring the founders of St. Louis has been built over a mass grave site.

The Gamache family, descendants of one of the first people to live in St. Louis, and Archdiocese of St. Louis helped raise money for the monument. Jenne Kostial and her family believe she's related to Jean Baptiste Gamache.

The monument at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis was dedicated Saturday.

The memorial site is located at a mass grave believed to contain the remains of Gamache, several of his relatives and at least 27 unidentified early St. Louisans. Kostial says Gamache was one of about 30 men led by Rene Auguste Chouteau.

The 9-foot-tall granite memorial honors and identifies some of the earliest St. Louisans.
