Missouri Public Service Commission to meet with electric utilities Monday

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Public Service Commission is meeting with representatives of the state's electric utilities to discuss the industry's future.

The commission, which regulates utilities, plans to receive presentations Monday in Jefferson City from both regulated electric utilities in Missouri and non-regulated providers. Those include electric cooperatives that serve rural areas and city-owned utilities.

The meeting is aimed at discussing alternative energy, future demand and changes in state and federal law.

Robert Clayton III, commission chairman, said that as a majority of the state's power is generated through the burning of coal, any taxing or other limits on carbon emissions could increase rates for Missouri customers.
