COLUMBIA — A two-car accident on I-70 Drive Southeast left one man dead and one man injured Wednesday afternoon.
According to a release from Columbia police, the accident killed 21-year-old Darin M. Garr and injured 66-year-old Theodore R. Hoell, both of Columbia.
Gary Warren Jr., Columbia Fire Department battalion chief, said that at about 3 p.m., a red Kia Sportage was pulling out of an apartment complex across the street from New Hope Church when it was broadsided by a beige Ford Taurus traveling east on I-70 Drive.
Hoell, who was driving the Taurus, was unable to avoid the Kia driven by Garr and made impact on the driver's side of the vehicle, the release stated. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The Kia rolled over once and came to rest upside down in a ditch on the north side of the street. Garr was ejected from the vehicle, according to the release.
Garr was confirmed dead on the scene. Hoell was transported to Boone Hospital and treated for neck, knee and chest pain. He was released Wednesday evening, the release stated.
The speed limit at the location of the accident is 50 mph, but respondents to the scene did not know what speed the vehicles were traveling at the time of impact.
