COLUMBIA — A log truck overturned and caught fire Saturday afternoon after blowing a steering tire and striking a road sign north of Columbia.
Steve Schrader, 48, of Boonville, was driving northbound on Highway 63 near the intersection of Breedlove Drive at about 3:30 p.m. when he heard his tire pop, began fish tailing and watched the truck’s hood disintegrate, he said. Schrader said he suffered no injuries from the crash.
Schrader knew he needed to get out quickly once he saw the flames.
Diesel fuel spilled and the fire spread rather quickly, Schrader said. A firefighter saw and reported the incident, which other firefighters responded to in eight to 10 minutes, according to Schrader.
Three fire trucks responded from the Boone County Fire Protection District. According to Tony Helfrecht of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, crews spent about 20 minutes putting the fire in a “controlled state.”
Schrader said the 1999 Western Star truck was a “total loss” and estimated damage at $80,000. He said he was just glad to be alive.
Schrader was the only person involved in the accident.
