Columbia teen dies in car crash

COLUMBIA — A Columbia teenager died Sunday morning in a car crash in Camden County.

Eric Benda, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene on Missouri Highway 5, according the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

According to a highway patrol news release, Sharon King, 67, was attempting to make a left-hand turn in her Honda going northbound when her vehicle collided with a Mitsubishi going southbound on the highway driven by Benda's father, Eric A. Benda, 39.

Eric A. Benda is in serious condition, along with passenger Gregory Benda, 15. They were both flown by helicopter to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Tanner Zeitvogel, who was also in the Mitsubishi, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital. None was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. The Bendas and Zeitvogel are all of Columbia.

Sharon King and passenger Larry King, 60, suffered moderate injuries, and were taken to Lake Regional Hospital. The patrol said both were wearing seat belts.
