ST. LOUIS — AmerenUE is giving a break to needy customers who have fallen behind in their utility payments.
The St. Louis-based utility has committed $3 million to the so-called "Clean Slate" program, which will help qualified customers pay their past-due utility bills.
Low-income elderly and disabled customers who have fallen behind on their bills will be helped first. Any remaining funds will help other low-income customers.
This effort is fully funded by Ameren; customers will not be charged for the program.
Ameren says the goal is to reach customers who literally have to choose each month between paying for utilities and paying for food, medicine or other essential services.
