JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri law enforcement agencies are launching an effort to crack down on speeding and drunken driving this summer.

During the past four years, Missouri has recorded its highest number of fatal and serious injury accidents between July and September.

The state Highway Patrol is teaming with the transportation department's Highway Safety Division and the state licensing agency on a new campaign dubbed "The Heat is On."

The initiative begins Tuesday. It includes 70 days of what the patrol describes as "high enforcement action teams" focused on speeders, drunken drivers and people not wearing seat belts.
