UPDATE: Law requires bids to run Missouri license offices

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Jay Nixon has signed legislation requiring the state to award contracts for license offices through competitive bidding.

Missouri first began seeking bids under former Gov. Matt Blunt for some of its offices that handle vehicle and driver's licenses and collect vehicle sales taxes. Nixon announced when he took office in January that all the license office contracts would be bid.

Nixon held a signing ceremony Wednesday at a license office in Springfield that already has been competitively bid. Nixon said requiring bids would dampen the role of political influence in deciding who gets offices.

Missouri has 183 fee offices where residents renew driver's licenses and motor vehicle registrations. The offices add a fee to each transaction, which can make them profitable, particularly in high-traffic urban and suburban areas.
