PrintJEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Jay Nixon has submitted a request to put a statue of former President Harry Truman in the U.S. Capitol.
Each state can honor two deceased residents in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. Currently, Missouri's statues are of Francis Preston Blair and former Sen. Thomas Hart Benton.
To replace a statue, the Legislature must pass a resolution, which the governor sends to Washington for consideration.
Missouri lawmakers in 2002 approved a resolution to replace the statue of Blair with one of Truman, who grew up in Independence and was president from 1945 until 1953. Blair served in Congress and was a major general in the U.S. Army during the Civil War.
The statue of Truman would be paid for with private funds.
