PrintCOLUMBIA – A brazen home invasion attempt at a residence on the 5600 block of Rocky Fort Drive was stopped when the occupants slammed the door on the would-be robbers.
Around 12:16 a.m. Wednesday morning, a group of adults playing cards were interrupted with a knock on the door, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department. When two adult residents answered the door, two men with their faces covered pointed a handgun at them and demanded that the residents open the door. The residents slammed and locked the door and the suspects fled, the release said.
Major Tom Reddin of the Boone County Sheriff's Department said that it is normal for suspects to run after a failed attempt, but "if someone was extremely determined they might act differently."
"Home invasions are very bold, there is no question about that," Reddin said. "Typically, in a vast majority of these cases the intruders are known to the residents or the victims, and unfortunately a vast majority of these are in some fashion drug related."
Reddin said that it is unknown in this particular case if the residents knew the suspects or if drugs are involved because the investigation has just begun, but it is rare for home invasions to be random.
According to the release, there were eight adults and three children in the house at the time of the incident. Officers were dispatched to the scene, and no one was hurt in the incident.
