KANSAS CITY — RiseUp, a short-lived newspaper insert dealing with race and ethnicity, owes The Kansas City Star and several other creditors $6 million.
RiseUp Publications LLC and its parent company, Ellis Management Marketing Group Inc., filed separate Chapter 7 bankruptcy petitions last month.
On Monday, the publisher filed documents listing 48 unsecured creditors including the Chicago Sun-Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Washington Post and other newspapers. The company listed assets of $6,900.
The Kansas City-based Ellis group created the magazine last year as an insert for major national newspapers. It appeared for only six weeks, reaching 4 million readers at its peak.
The Kansas City Star is owed $2.2 million while founder Janice Ellis and her husband, local businessman Frank Ellis, claimed to have lent RiseUp $1.76 million.
