PrintCOLUMBIA — Kelly Schultz will run a second time for the 21st District seat in the Missouri House of Representatives.
Schultz, a Democrat, ran for the seat in the 2008 election but lost to incumbent Steve Hobbs, R-Mexico.
In her campaign for the 2010 election, Schultz said she will focus on three main points, the first being health care.
“Jay Nixon and the (Missouri) Hospital Association have developed a plan that wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime,” she said. The plan redirects hospital payments, which allows the state to draw matching federal money, Schultz said. The money would be used to provide health care coverage to individuals with low income. The plan already has been rejected by the House, but Schultz wants to bring it back to the floor.
Her second priority is creating jobs and her third is public education. She said she wants every child, regardless of his or her needs, to have the opportunity to learn.
“I think we need to really focus in on science and math and technology to prepare our students for competing in an international market,” Schultz said.
Schultz works for Rep. Sara Lampe, D-Springfield, who is the minority caucus secretary. A staff member at the Capitol for the last 10 years, Schultz formerly worked for Jeff Harris when he was the minority floor leader.
Schultz graduated from MU with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public policy. She also is a foster parent with her husband, Loren. While they have had 11 foster children, they have one daughter Brianna, 4, living at home.
Schultz raised more than $7,500 in the first quarter, she said.
According to previous reports by the Missourian, Schultz lost in her first election by a margin of 2,225 votes. Hobbs received 10,115 votes, or 56.2 percent; Shultz received 7,890 votes, or 43.8 percent.
Schultz beat Hobbs in Boone County by 82 votes, or less than 1 percent, according to the Boone County Web site.
The 21st District includes parts of Audrain, Boone, Callaway and Monroe counties.
