JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is visiting troops in the Middle East with governors from Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada and Texas.

Nixon arrived in the Middle East on Friday and spent Saturday night at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. On Sunday, he was at a base in Kuwait. The governor was invited by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Democratic governor spoke to Missouri reporters on Sunday. Nixon said he is in the Middle East to show support for the troops, to better understand the National Guard's role and to make a pitch for securing better equipment for the Guard.

It's unclear if other stops are planned or when he will return to Missouri. Nixon said security rules bar him from talking about future destinations.

Seems like a waste of money and time to me. Isn't there enough work to do here?

("The governor was invited by the U.S. Department of Defense.")
What criteria was used for these invites.
Did any governors decline the invite?
Who paid for the trip? The feds? The state? Middle Easterners?

Now that's a funny one, the state actually being in charge of the Guard deployment.
