JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is visiting troops in the Middle East with governors from Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada and Texas.

Nixon arrived in the Middle East on Friday and spent Saturday night at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. On Sunday, he was at a base in Kuwait. The governor was invited by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Democratic governor spoke to Missouri reporters on Sunday. Nixon said he is in the Middle East to show support for the troops, to better understand the National Guard's role and to make a pitch for securing better equipment for the Guard.

It's unclear if other stops are planned or when he will return to Missouri. Nixon said security rules bar him from talking about future destinations.
