WASHINGTON — The eastern Missouri community of Washington is under a boil order until Wednesday, after a routine water sample tested positive for E. coli bacteria.
The order began Friday. Officials are still trying to determine exactly how they got the bacteria reading.
City Administrator Jim Briggs says residents need to boil water vigorously for at least three minutes before drinking it or brushing their teeth. People should throw out ice in their freezers as a precaution.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources notified the city Friday afternoon that one of the 10 samples it submits each month tested positive for the bacteria.
