PrintAfter a proposal to post a sign reading “Welcome to Jefferson City” on July 5 by the Eastside Business Association, the Jefferson City Council raised debate about the official name of the city. The council is expected to vote on the sign Monday night.
Jefferson City Councilman Bob Scrivner said there was some question as to the city’s proper title.
“Are we the City of Jefferson? Or Jefferson City? I am sometimes chastised for using 'Jefferson City' or 'Jeff City.' I almost don't know how to ask this question ... it sounds argumentative," Scrivner was quoted as saying by the Jefferson City News Tribune.
City Attorney Nathan Nickolaus, who arbitrates what qualifies as “official,” said he didn’t know, the News Tribune reported.
After researching the issue, it was decided that originally, the city was incorporated in 1825 as “The City of Jefferson.”
Mayor John Landwehr said the welcome sign should mirror how the city is listed on maps, GPS systems and the green population signs that drivers will see when entering the city's limits.
Scrivner said the proposed sign would be approved by the council with the original message of “Welcome to Jefferson City.”
