JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Libertarian Party's candidate for lieutenant governor in 2004 has defected to the Republican Party.
Mike Ferguson announced his move Wednesday in a message posted to his Web site. He called himself a Republican in the mold of former President Ronald Reagan and the late Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona.
Ferguson said he joined the GOP because he doesn't want to "dilute the freedom-centered vote." He criticized spending, energy and health care plans coming from Washington.
Ferguson also endorsed Republican Rep. Roy Blunt in his campaign to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Kit Bond. Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has also entered the Senate race.
