ST. LOUIS — This week, teams are to begin evaluating hundreds of pit bulls seized in the largest U.S. raid on dog fighters.
The Humane Society of Missouri has asked rescue groups to help place dogs deemed adoptable — if only a single dog — to manage a crisis that response animal groups said they haven't seen since Hurricane Katrina.
Teams in St. Louis are to assess more than 400 dogs seized July 8 from suspected dog-fighting operations in Missouri and Illinois. The same process is to play out for another 100 pit bulls taken that day in Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Nebraska.
