PrintCOLUMBIA – "Food, Inc.," a documentary by filmmaker Robert Kenner, will be showing at 6 p.m. tonight at Ragtag Cinema.
"Food, Inc." follows the nation's food industry and uncovers issues the film claims are being hidden from consumers. The documentary looks at various issues, including the nation's food supply, the livelihood of U.S. farmers, worker safety and the environment, according to the film's Web site.
A panel discussion will be held after the documentary viewing. Panel members include people from various local businesses and organizations, including Columbia Sustainability Partners, Missouri Rural Crisis Center, Uprise Bakery, Community Garden Coalition, Show Me Local Food Coalition and Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture.

Not surprising that the panel would include such a (collectively) slanted perspective, but it's a shame that Ragtag didn't get anyone from the agribusiness or agricultural economics program at MU...especially since the agribusiness program is one of the best in the country. They would risk hearing a dissenting point of view--and perhaps that's why no one is on the panel--but at least there could be an honest and open discussion of the merits of the film based on objective research and analysis. Perhaps Ragtag would consider a reviewing of the film sometime or will at least consider taking advantage of the resources we have in Columbia to offer more genuine discussions of interesting socio-economic political issues.
