Nixon unfreezes $16 million for Missouri veteran homes

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Jay Nixon is allowing renovations to Missouri veteran homes to continue.

His administration had stalled the renovations over financial worries. But on Tuesday, Nixon released $16.1 million for construction projects at the state's seven veteran homes.

Lawmakers included money for the projects in the state budget that took effect July 1. Nixon, a Democrat, blocked the ability to spend the money out of concern that it could bankrupt a state fund that helps pay for the homes.

The governor's office said it is allowing the money to be spent because the federal government has increased the reimbursement paid to states for running the facilities.

The Missouri Veterans Commission operates homes in Cameron, Cape Girardeau, Mexico, Mount Vernon, St. James, St. Louis and Warrensburg.
