State official sought E. coli study weeks before release, newspaper reports

SPRINGFIELD — A newspaper is reporting that a state official asked for a copy of a report on dangerously high levels of E. coli in the Lake of the Ozarks to take to a meeting in the governor's office — weeks before the information was released to the public.
The Springfield News-Leader reported Wednesday that Joe Bindbeutel, deputy director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, asked his staff on June 3 for a copy of the report to take to a meeting the next day with an aide to Gov. Jay Nixon.

A spokesman for the governor said the E. coli report was not discussed during the meeting on June 4. Nixon's office has denied knowing anything about the test results until June 23, three days before the test results were released to the public.
