Money-saving tips from students

"Take advantage of all the free activities on campus."

— BreAnn Jensen, Jefferson City

"Sort out your financial aid. Don't abuse your student charge card. You can get everything you need on campus like clothes and food, so don't waste all your money on vending machines."

— Wayne Roberts, St Louis

"Find and apply for as many scholarships as possible. Watch your spending and know how to use your student charge card. Walmart is the No. 1 place to get supplies; campus prices are expensive. Take advantage of the meal plan. Load up at breakfast for the day."

Daniel Nabelek, Columbia

"Only get one credit card and only if you can pay it yourself. When you run out of meals, it is very helpful."

— Jamon Kimbrough, Columbia

"Buy off-brand food, turn off the air conditioner, take lukewarm showers, don’t do your laundry as often as you should and buy cheap beer."

— Matt Rose, St Louis

"Eat at home."

— Haleigh Harrold, Creswell, Ore.

"Take advantage of free opportunities that come your way."

— Cynthia Taylor, Lancaster, Pa.

"Set a budget at the beginning of the month or week."

Alyssa Baker, St. Louis

"The Mizzou After Dark group shows movies and has discounted events."

Sarah Bryant, Holden

"Take advantage of the dining hall – don’t spend your money on food. Get a part-time job on campus."

Mike Jelinek, Eureka

"Don’t do something your friends are doing if you don’t have the money."

— Mola Kassim, Jefferson City

"Get all your books online. Go on Amazon and buy them used."

Drake Chang, Washington, Mo.

"If  you live on campus, you shouldn’t pay for food. Every Saturday, cash in your meals to get perishables for your room."

—  Spencer Evans, Houston

"Work and take out the least amount of student loans as possible."

— Sean Morrissey, Fenton

"Definitely get in-state tuition. Work to make money."

 — John Smith, St Louis

"Try not to eat out as often; you end up spending too much. Keep an eye on the bulletin boards around campus for free speakers and events."

— Jason Macionus, Jefferson City

"Dollar burgers and chips at Big Twelve on Sunday (corner of Ninth and Elm).  Otherwise, eat in more!"

— Janai Norman, DeKalb Ill.

"Don’t use student charge – it all adds up. Research all the student housing – there are decent ones for less money."

— Zack Whitworth, Nixa

"Clip coupons."

Brian Woodward, Jefferson City

"Ramen noodles."

—  Ben Meredith, Columbia
