Thefts from vehicles prompts warning

COLUMBIA — Recent thefts from three unlocked cars in Boone County spurred a warning from the Boone County Sheriff's Department on Thursday.

A cell phone and four packs of cigarettes were taken from two cars on North Lespedeza Lane, and a few CDs and tools were taken from a car on East Cedar Court. It was apparent someone had rummaged through four more cars on North Lespedeza Lane and two on Godas Drive, Detective Tom O'Sullivan said, but nothing was taken.

A release from the sheriff's department reminded people to lock their cars and not leave valuable items such as cell phones, cameras, purses or money sitting out, or to leave keys in the ignition.

"These vehicular larcenies are fairly common, especially when people don't lock their vehicles," O'Sullivan said.

Although the Sheriff's Department has no leads yet, O'Sullivan said he thinks the thefts at the three locations are probably not connected.
