Columbia police officers receive award for saving life
Two police officers were awarded the Ribbon of Meritorious Service on Monday night for helping to save a Columbia man.
On May 20, officers Chad Craig and Matt Hibler responded to a call at a home on Russell Boulevard. Inside, they found Delbert Porter, who had suffered a heart attack and was unresponsive.
“We knocked the door down and went in and did CPR,” Hibler said.
The officers continued CPR for approximately five minutes until fire and medical personnel arrived. Although the officers’ actions saved Porter that day, he died two days later.
The officers received their award for performing an act that resulted in the saving of a human life, Fifth Ward Councilwoman Laura Nauser said at the award ceremony.
“I really like the community support,” Craig said after receiving a plaque and ribbon from Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton. “That’s what means more to me than an award.”
