High-speed chase results in three-vehicle accident

COLUMBIA — A high-speed chase resulted in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of McBaine Avenue and Ash Street around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Columbia Police Department, Anthony Jacobs, 27, who was wanted for violating his parole, was seen by a Street Crimes officer as he was driving a blue Camaro near the intersection. The Camaro had been reported stolen in Warrenton on Wednesday.

Jacobs attempted to elude the police officer by turning south on McBaine where he struck a black 2002 Chevy S-10 before running into a telephone pole, the release said. The truck's driver, Daniel Hood, 42, was driving west on Ash on his way home from work. His vehicle spun and the airbags were deployed. He was wearing his seat belt.

Hood was back-boarded and transported to Boone Hospital and released later that evening. According to Columbia Fire Department Captain Don Zielinski, Hood suffered "bumps and bruises," and his injuries were not severe.

A passenger in the car Jacobs was driving, Montrez Robinson, 17, of Columbia was transported with minor injuries to Boone Hospital by paramedics. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

Jacobs was later apprehended by police after he fled the scene on foot. Two fire trucks and at least six police cars responded to the scene, closing the intersection to through traffic.

Police said a third vehicle, a parked and unoccupied white car, was also struck. A traffic reconstructionist was investigating at the scene.

Local resident Dominick Lee  said he heard screeching followed by a crash from the living room of his house.

“I heard the most god-awful screeching of tires, and I thought my car had been hit,” said Lee. His vehicle was not hit.

Lee stepped out and saw the driver of the blue Camaro flee the scene on foot, running west through yards, he said.

Two linemen from the Columbia Water and Light were called to the scene to inspect the damage to the pole. Lineman Carl Turner said he expected the pole to be fixed before dark. Only one house lost power temporarily.

Jacobs was wanted on numerous warrants from other jurisdictions, as well as charges from a prior pursuit involving Columbia police on July 9. He was to be transported to the Boone County Jail. His bond had not been set as of 9:30 p.m.
