Skelton says U.S. Army will modernize Whiteman helicopter

LEXINGTON — Rep. Ike Skelton says the U.S. Army has approved a plan to modernize AH-64A Apache Attack helicopters used by a Missouri National Guard battalion at Whiteman Air Force Base.

The Democrat from Missouri announced Thursday that the helicopters assigned to the Guard's 1/135th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion will be refitted with the Longbow, the Army's primary attack helicopter.

He says the upgrades will begin arriving at Whiteman in October 2011. A total fleet of 24 helicopters — eight more than currently stationed at the base — are scheduled to arrive by May 2012.

Skelton also announced that the Air Force 498th Munitions Maintenance Group Headquarters staff — about 12 people — will be transferred to Whiteman from Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., in the next few months.
