Hearing set on Missouri grain fraud claims

MARTINSBURG — Farmers who lost money in a $50 million grain fraud scheme will get a chance to recover part of their investments at a state Department of Agriculture hearing.

The administrative hearing was set for 10 a.m. Friday in the northeastern Missouri town of Martinsburg.

The Agriculture Department has received 180 claims from affected farmers totaling more than $27 million. The U.S. Attorney's Office in St. Louis says the totals could reach even higher.

Former grain dealer Cathy Gieseker faces 12 state felony charges connected to what officials call the biggest Ponzi scheme in state history. She also faces federal criminal charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property.
