ST. LOUIS — The head of the St. Louis Police Officers' Association said the department might be behind the times with a new policy that prohibits officers and civilian employees from having visible tattoos.

The policy went into force last week. Several officers have been sent home because their tattoos were showing.

Sgt. Gary Wiegert heads the officers' association. He thinks the policy is unfair to officers hired when visible tattoos were allowed.

The officers' association plans a meeting next week to discuss the new personal appearance code.
