COLUMBIA — One person was injured Saturday afternoon in a rollover accident on Interstate 70, west of Stadium Boulevard.

At about 12:06 p.m., a vehicle rolled into the median barricade wires while traveling west on Interstate 70, according to a Columbia Fire Department news release. Investigators with the Columbia Police Department think a blown tire was the cause of the accident.

Fire crews were able to remove the victim from the vehicle within 15 minutes of their arrival. The victim was transported to University Hospital with unknown injuries, the release states.

The west-bound lanes of Interstate 70 were shut down for 30 minutes as fire crews worked on the scene. The crews spent an additional 30 minutes cleaning debris and removing the vehicle, the release states.

The Fire Department thinks it is likely that the median guard cables saved lives by preventing a crossover and potential head-on collision, the release states.
