On behalf of Special Olympics Missouri, please extend my deepest gratitude to the volunteers, organizers, sponsors and spectators from Columbia and the surrounding areas that made the 2009 State Outdoor Championships an incredible success. We couldn't have done it without each and every one of them.
Everyone, from athletes to staff members, benefited from the endless hospitality and support from the community. We would especially like to thank Jefferson City Parks & Recreation Department for organizing the games for the past 15 years.
More than 700 athletes and coaches from around the state took to the links at L.A. Nickell Golf Course and competed in softball and tennis at Cosmopolitan Park. Athletes enjoyed a variety of activities at Victory Village, where they also benefited from a Healthy Athletes screening and blew off some steam at the Victory Dance on Friday night at the Holiday Inn Expo Center. Everyone had a wonderful weekend.
The Columbia community has always been kind to Special Olympics, and this event was no exception as donations and volunteers were plentiful. We look forward to seeing all of you again next year.
Mark Musso is the president and CEO of Special Olympics Missouri.
