PrintCOLUMBIA — Police arrested a Columbia man Sunday morning after items were stolen from a police bait car, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
Police responded to a bait car alarm at approximately 12:30 a.m. in the area of Grand Avenue in northern Columbia.
Daryl Loving, 49, was seen in the area, and he had items in his possession that had been stolen from the bait car, the news release stated.
Loving was arrested on suspicion of stealing with a bond of $4,500 and was transported to the Boone County Jail.
The Police Department’s Bait Car Program began in December 2007 in response to an increasing number of auto thefts, according to previous Missourian reports.
The bait cars are equipped with an alarm system and video and audio recording equipment, according to the city's Web site. Police are also able to track the location of the car after it has been stolen and disable the engine from a distance.
Auto thefts decreased 33 percent in 2008, according to the Columbia Police Department's 2008 Crime Statistics Report.
