ST. LOUIS — A Florissant man who admitted robbing 12 St. Louis-area banks has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $105,000 in restitution.
Donald Giammanco, known as the "Boonie Hat Bandit," was sentenced Thursday.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Reap has said Giammanco made off with amounts ranging from $1,300 at one bank to $26,000 at another. Seven of the robberies were in St. Louis County, five in St. Charles County.
Giammanco earned the nickname because he twice wore military-style, floppy-brimmed "Boonie" hats during robberies. Other times, he wore suit jackets or other nice clothing.
After his capture in September, authorities described the 45-year-old Giammanco as an out-of-work construction worker.
