ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis school district has resolved some lead-paint problems at 25 elementary schools, but not all of the work has been completed as classes begin today.

Public schools spokesman Patrick Wallace said about $420,000 has been spent to perform lead-paint abatement in school rooms for children 6 and under. Young children are the most at risk for possible health problems from ingesting chips or dust from lead-based paint.

The project also called for replacing windows, and the bids for that work were higher than inspected.

Wallace said Monday that if the school board approves a new bid in September, new windows could be safely installed during the school year whenever children are not present.
