TUESDAY FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

•  Senior wide receiver Jared Perry did some things Tuesday that will help his case to be back with the No. 1 offense. During one-on-one receiving drills, Perry put a great double move on cornerback Kevin Rutland and cradled a well-thrown Jimmy Costello pass in the back left corner of the end zone. Later on in 11-on-11 drills Perry did an excellent job sustaining a block on Sean Weatherspoon down field during a long De'Vion Moore run.

• Continuing the list of throws he has seemingly mastered, Blaine Gabbert hit Andrew Jones with a perfectly lofted ball on the left sideline just over the head of the cornerback, but not deep enough to bring the safety into play. The throw is a great measure of touch for any quarterback, and is an incredible asset against teams that play a lot of zone coverage with two deep safeties.

• Danario Alexander really seems to be taking on his role as a team captain. The often-reserved Alexander was barking out instructions and encouragement throughout the team's first 11-on-11 session of the day. It didn't matter if it was the second string offense or the fourth. Alexander was unhappy with the performance on his side of the ball, and he did his best to change it.

• Former high school quarterback and current freshman wide receiver T.J. Moe showed that, at the least, he has some of the raw skills necessary to make the difficult transition across positions. During a full team session in the red zone Moe ran a crossing route over the middle of the field and managed to grab a touchdown pass away  from a host of defenders.

• During an option drill sophomore defensive end Aldon Smith showed just how useful the wingspan of someone 6'5'' can be. Smith came off the edge, and using his big frame to simultaneously play the quarterback and the pitchman managed to tip the pitch up in the air before the ball fell right into the waiting hands of Jaron Baston. The play showed an incredible combination of athleticism, patience and sound positioning.

• Smith wasn't done, either. On the last play of the practice's final 11-on-11 session Smith got an excellent jump off the ball, racing past freshman tackle Jack Meiners almost untouched before disrupting Blaine Gabbert's vision and throwing lane and causing the ball to fall incomplete.

• Meiners, a true freshman, got a majority of the reps with the first team offense at right tackle after an injury to first string right tackle Dan Hoch. Head coach Gary Pinkel said that Hoch has a sprained knee, and that he will have an MRI done later on Tuesday.

• Sophomore tight end Andrew Jones was also a member of the walking wounded Tuesday morning, limping off during a full team session. Pinkel said that Jones has a hip pointer and that the injury shouldn't keep him out long.
