Toddler found in swimming pool dies

JACKSON — A southeast Missouri toddler who was found in the swimming pool of his home has died.

The Southeast Missourian reports that 20-month-old Jared Ryan Birk died Tuesday at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He was discovered Sunday morning by his father.

Cape Girardeau County Detective Jamie Malugen says the child's mother had put in a video for the boy to watch. She then fell asleep.

When the toddler's father awoke, he noticed the sliding glass door to the backyard was open and saw his son in the pool unconscious. There was a gate around the pool, but the door had been accidentally left open because of work being done to the pool.

The parents will not face charges.
