PrintST. LOUIS — Missouri state Sen. Jeff Smith of St. Louis has pleaded guilty to two federal counts of obstruction of justice tied to his failed 2004 congressional campaign and announced he will resign from office, ending what was once thought to be a promising political career.
Fellow Democrat, Rep. Steve Brown of Clayton, also pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of conspiring to obstruct justice, and said that he, too, will resign.
Smith's failed 2004 congressional campaign came under scrutiny after a supposedly independent group distributed postcards and fliers critical of his primary opponent, Russ Carnahan.
In his plea, Smith admitted involvement and admitted that he lied to FEC investigators.
Smith's 2004 campaign treasurer, Nick Adams, is also expected to plead guilty on Tuesday.

Funny thing is, that he probably would of gotten a slap on the wrist for the thing he was trying to cover up. It is the cover-up that gets these guys in trouble.
