Hit-and-run victim's car involved in similar incident day before

COLUMBIA — A man hit by a car early Wednesday morning might have been connected to a hit-and-run the night before, police said, and he was on his way to the police station to sort it out when he was hit.

A small, gray passenger vehicle struck Shaetwyn Allen at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of College and Ash streets.

Allen was crossing the street when the car struck him. The driver stopped to look back before driving off and leaving Allen in the street, Columbia police Detective Jeff Westbrook said.

Allen was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

Police officers had questioned Allen before he was struck Wednesday morning because they thought his car was involved in a Tuesday night hit-and-run in a parking lot at 500 N. College Ave.

He told police he had loaned out his car that night, but changed his story when police called back, Westbrook said. Allen was later issued a summons for leaving the scene of an accident.

Westbrook said Allen was on his way to the police station to discuss the matter when he was hit.

There is no lead on the driver or car from Wednesday's hit-and-run, Westbrook said.
