St. Louis FBI chief says more corruption cases coming

ST. LOUIS — The head of the FBI in St. Louis says there are more public corruption cases to come following the guilty pleas of two Missouri lawmakers.

State Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, and Rep. Steve Brown, D-Clayton, resigned Tuesday after admitting they conspired to obstruct an investigation related to Smith's unsuccessful 2004 congressional campaign.

John Gillies, the FBI special agent in charge of the St. Louis office, says there has been a "significant increase" in the number of public corruption cases it is investigating.

Gillies says the agency investigates corruption involving elected officials, law enforcement officers, contracts, regulatory agencies and the judiciary. He says the FBI in eastern Missouri has active cases in all but one of those areas, but he declined to elaborate.
