COLUMBIA — Forrest Smith, 73, claims his golf game has deteriorated with age. The admission is hard to believe. Thursday, Smith shot his second hole-in-one at Columbia Country Club on the same hole he made his first hole-in-one about five years ago. Smith used a 7-iron Thursday to make the 127-yard shot on hole 13.
Smith, a retired engineer living near Jefferson City, ventures to Columbia Country Club four times a week to play golf with a group of friends who call themselves the Drummers. Bill Williamson, a member of the group who witnessed both of Smith’s hole-in-ones, calls Smith a “salty golfer and terrific guy." Williamson attributes the name of their group to the phrase “beat the drum” which means to raise the stakes. The group has even created a golf game called the drum and posted the rules on its Web site.
Smith shot an 81 Thursday, which he said was not his best score, but he was content with nonetheless.
“It’s always fun to get a hole in one,” he said. “The shot just went straight to the hole. I didn’t even think about it going in.”
