Spiva Crossing Road closes for construction

COLUMBIA — Spiva Crossing Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Friday as it enters the second stage of a three-stage bridge project, the Boone County Public Works Department announced Thursday.

The estimated cost for the three stages is between $150,000 and $160,000. All three parts of the project are expected to be completed by late November.

The road is closing to facilitate replacing three drainage structures located along Spiva Crossing Road.

For the second stage, the county is removing a culvert from the road. The culvert, is being replaced with a precast concrete bridge deck.

Derin Campbell, interim director of the Public Works Department, said the bridge will be more efficient than the culvert.

The first stage required the replacement of a small pipe, which was put in earlier this week. After installing the precast concrete bridge deck, another pipe will be replaced and upgraded from 72 inches to 84 inches.

Campbell said the longer pipe will allow for additional capacity. Also, it will be made out of a different type of material that lasts longer.

Spiva Crossing Road is expected to be closed for at least the next month, weather permitting.

Boone County spokeswoman Porcshe Moran recommended North Brown Station, East Orear and North Sheridan roads as detour routes. Spiva Crossing Road has an average daily traffic of 324 cars.
