COLUMBIA — A granddaughter of former Missouri basketball coach Norm Stewart was found dead after her car crashed into a tree early Sunday morning.
Jennifer C. Stewart, 29, of Columbia, was found dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday on Highlands Court near Bentpath Drive in far south Columbia, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.
- A teddy bear and several flowers rest at the base of the tree where Jennifer Stewart wrecked her Jeep early Sunday morning. The single-car accident, which occurred at 3 a.m. on Highlands Court, is still under investigation. Police reports state that Stewart appeared to not be wearing a seat belt.
Police found the vehicle, a 1991 Jeep Cherokee, crashed into the tree and on fire when they arrived. No other vehicles or people were involved. According to the release, Stewart was traveling east on Highlands Court at a high rate of speed and traveled off the south side of the road.
Police said it appeared that Stewart was not wearing a seat belt.
Members of the department’s traffic unit will continue to investigate the crash.
