LETTER: 'Cash for Clunkers' was good for taxpayers

Robert Blake, Columbia
The Cash for Clunkers program was beneficial. It replaced gas-guzzlers with gas-efficient vehicles, which helps the economy and environment. It was designed to be a short-term stimulus for car sales, and it was. Whether or not the increased sales will be sustained will be determined by other factors. Compared to the many billions of dollars wasted on weapons systems that are not needed and on the Iraq debacle, the cost was a wonderful deal for taxpayers.

Well that is just perfect logic, Robert. No wonder our country is in the shape it is. Sounds like the rationalization my sons try to use "Well he did <X> so why can't I do <Y>?"
("Come on down to Uncle Sugar's Auto Mall! It's the CASH FOR CLUNKERS EXTRAVAGANZA and Uncle Sugar has gotta deal for you, courtesy of voiceless posterity (at the intersection of unsound policy and political expediency). Because concentrated benefits and dispersed cost is the NEW AMERICAN WAY!")

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)

@jhenry:
So like driveable F-150's are being taken out of the used vehicle market and totally destroyed just to create some cash flow for a special portion of private industry thanks to the federal governmnet at the expense of the average tax-payer?
What's next? Cash for Charcoal Bar-b-cue grills? Cash for old TV's? Cash for Junkers?
When will Obama take over the Salvation Army Thrift Stores and Goodwill Industries?
