Today's question: What qualities would you like to see in a new mayor?

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 | 11:42 a.m. CDT

When Mayor Darwin Hindman announced last Thursday that he won't seek re-election, he left the election field wide open. Hindman has dominated the last five mayoral elections, so he's seen lots of changes to the city.

His City Council colleagues cited his work on the parks system as his greatest legacy. Hindman said he hoped to also be remembered for his other successes, including economic development. He was also known for his down-to-earth attitude toward just about everything.

"He has the unique ability to take a relaxed approach to very complex issues, and what has come out of that has been food for thought for everyone," Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala told the Missourian last week.

The race for Hindman's seat will no doubt gear up quickly. One possible candidate, Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Wade, has said he'll announce a decision in mid-September, which is fast approaching. During the last wide-open election, when Hindman was first chosen as mayor, six candidates vied for the spot.

"I hope there will be a vigorous campaign," Hindman said about the election for his successor.

Some one who truly cares about this city not just certain interest groups.

Someone who tries to keep the pulse of this city on their mind at all times.

Some one who is concerned about the real issues citizens are concerned about that effect all of our lives.

Some one who wants "Smart Growth" and not "Sprawl Growth".

Some one who really cares about the crime issues in this city.

Someone who is not afraid to tell things as they really are with no sugar coating involved.

Somebody willing to take on the Slum Lords in this community.

Mike Martin for Mayor in 2010. A candidate that is for the people and not against them.
